Dmitry Bivol was born DmitryYuryevich Bivol on December 18, 1990, in Tokmak, Kyrgyz, SSR. He is the son of Yelena Bivol and her husband, Yuriy Bivol. His father is of Moldovan descent, and his mother is of Korean descent. Dmitry's family moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, when he was 11 years old. Bivol stands six feet and weighs 75 kgs.

Dmitry started training karate at the age of six. He was a decorated amateur, winning two world championships at the junior (U-17) level and a bronze medal at the 2008 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championship. Bivol won the Russian national amateur boxing championships in 2012 and 2014. The fighter finished his amateur career with 268-15. Dmitry made his professional debut in November 2014 against Jorge Rodriguez Olivera. He won the match in the sixth round via TKO. 

In August 2015, Bivol won his first title of vacant WBC-USNBC Silver Light-heavyweight title against Felipe Romero. Shortly after that, He won the vacant WBA Inter-Continental light-heavyweight title against Jackson Junior. Dmitry won his first six professional matches via TKO. In May 2016, The fighter won his third title of WBA Interim light-heavyweight against Felix Valera. In 2017, Bivol retained his titles in four matches.  

Since 2018, Dmitry has retained his WBA light-heavyweight title and WBA Super light-heavyweight title more than six times. In 2019, He defended his title against Joe Smith Jr. In May 2021, Bivol retained his title against Craig Richard. Dmitry has fought in eighteen matches and has won all of them. Bivol has won eleven games via knockouts and seven via decision. 

He is scheduled to face Canelo Alvarez on 7th May 2022 to defend WBA (Super) light-heavyweight title.
