Luis Suarez was born as Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz on 24 January 1987. He was born to Uruguayan parents Sandra Suarez and Rudolf Suarez in Salto, Uruguay. He was the fourth among the seven sons.
His brothers are Paolo Suarez and Diego Suarez, his sisters are Leticia Suarez and Giovanna Suarez. His brother Paolo is also a professional footballer.

Luis Suarez began his professional footballing career since 2005, joining the Uruguayan professional club Nacional. He made his debut appearance for his team on 16 May 2005, in a match against Junior de Barranquilla. His only season with the club ended up with a total of 27 appearances and 10 goals. He then got transferred to a Dutch professional club Groningen in 2006, at the age of 19. He made his professional debut for his club on 12 August 2006. He was in the club for a season making a total of 29 appearances and 10 goals. He further made his move to the Dutch top club Ajax in 2007 and made his debut in a match against UEFA Champions League qualifier against Slavia Prague. Ajax finished second in the league in the 2007–08 season and Suárez scored 17 goals in 33 league appearances.
His three successive season with the club ended up with a total of 110 games and 81 goals. He then made his move to England joining the Premier League's side Liverpool. The move was officially completed on 31 January 2011, signing to a five-and-a-half-year deal with the club. He made his Anfield debut on 2 February 2011, against Stoke City scoring a goal.
