Josh Nichols is an exciting young right-back who was brought into Arsenal's academy at an early age and penned his first professional contract in 2024. His pace and defensive traits saw him make his senior debut in the same year and be available to play for England, Nigeria, Jamaica, or Guyana at the international level.
Joshua Joel Marcel Nichols was born in Newham, London, on July 26, 2006. He was brought up in Dagenham before moving to Essex when he was nine or ten. Following his father, a former player and coach, Nichols began playing for Sunday League club Euro Dagenham. With a multicultural heritage, his mother is Nigerian, and his father is Jamaican-Guyanese.
Besides football, Nichols was also a sports school student, particularly in sprinting and the long jump. He used to idolize football heroes Neymar, Ronaldinho, and Lionel Messi, who encouraged him to play football.
Nichols' progress via junior football included trials at several London clubs. He initially trialed at West Ham but wasn't signed, then almost signed for Chelsea but didn't because of travel problems. After a brief trial at Tottenham Hotspur, he trialed at Arsenal but was initially rejected. But two weeks later, Arsenal had a change of heart and signed him, making his dream a reality as a Gunners fan for life.
He joined Arsenal's academy at the under-9 level in 2014. Nichols began playing as a striker or winger but was converted to a right-back position, where he has excelled. In the 2023/24 season, he played 35 games for Arsenal's youth teams, including six UEFA Youth League games, scoring three goals.

In July 2024, Nichols signed his first professional contract with Arsenal. He was included in the club's first-team pre-season tour of the United States that summer, where he caught the eye with his defensive solidity and calmness, especially in a friendly win over Manchester United.
Nichols debuted professionally on September 25, 2024, as a substitute starter in a 5–1 EFL Cup victory over Bolton Wanderers. Even though he had not appeared in the Premier League yet, as of late 2024, his playing has made him a promising star on Arsenal's team.
Primarily a right-back, Nichols can operate on either flank as well as in the right midfield or left-back positions. His athletic background is to be thanked for imbuing him with the pace, agility, and stamina to cover defense and offense alike. Praised for remaining level-headed on the ball and serving up good one-on-one defensive work, Nichols is what a modern fullback is supposed to be, bringing defensive solidity with attacking thrust.
Though born and raised in England, Nichols is eligible to play for some countries around the world due to his heritage. He can play for Nigeria through his mother and Jamaica and Guyana through his father. He thus has choices aplenty in front of him for his international career, although he has yet to make a senior international appearance.
Josh Nichols is ranked among the top young defenders at Arsenal because he is fast, defensive, and has the capacity to become a consistent first-team player in the not-so-distant future.
