Lucas Martin Matthysse a.k.a. Lucas Matthysee is an Argentine former welterweight and light welterweight boxer, who held the WBC Inter-Continental Light Welterweight title. The fighter is well recognized for his formidable punching power and aggressive pressure fighting.

 

Matthysse took retirement from boxing recently in August 2018.  

Lucas Matthysse's Early Life

Lucas Matthysse was born on 27th September 1982 in Trelew, Chubut, Argentina. His father, Mario Edgardo Matthysse is a former professional boxer with 58 fights in his career; whereas his mother, Doris Matthysse, is a homemaker. His maternal grandfather, Miguel Angel Steinbach was also a boxer.

Matthysse grew alongside his sister, Soledad Edith Matthysse, and elder brother, Walter Matthysse, who is also a professional boxer and famous as “El Terrible.”

Following his family foot step, Matthysee began training at the tender age of eleven. The following year he left school to focus only in MMA.

The significant source of Matthysse’s income is a professional boxing career. There is no typical salary in boxing; the fighter gets paid a decent sum for winning a fight, sponsorship deals and endorsing products and brands.  

As of 2018, Matthysee has not disclosed his exact figure of net worth and salary, however, looking at his successful career his net worth is estimated to be around $10 million. He earned about $2.5 million from his last fight against Manny Pacquiao. He was also paid about $1 million despite losing against Danny Gracia.

Amateur Career

Throughout his amateur career, Lucas Matthysse competed in the 2003 Pan America Games at Santo Domingo, Dominica Republic, where he defeated Colombia’s Breidis Prescott in the round one. Also, he has faced Marcos Maidana four time in the amateurs with Maidana winning thrice while competing for the fourth to a draw.

Professional Career

Light welterweight

On 4th June 2004, Lucas Matthysse made his professional debut at Gimnasio Municipal N 1, Trelew, Argentina, against Leandro Almagro. He won the fight via TKO in round two. 

Matthysse vs. Judah

At the main event of HBO card, Matthysse was defeated by former world champion Zab Judah via very disputed split decision on 6th November 2010.

Matthysee vs. Alexander

Matthysee took on Devon Alexander on 25th June 2011 and lost via split decision where the judges in the Family Arena in St. Charles has the 96-93, and 96-93 for him and 95-94 for Alexander.

Matthysse vs. Martinez, Soto, and Olusegun

On 10th February 2012, Matthysse faced Mexican Martin Angel Martinez at the Gimnasio Municipal, Chubut, Argentina in a scheduled 12 round bout for the vacant WBA Inter-Continental light welterweight title. After the fifth round, Martinez was retired.

Following the victory, Matthysse was set up a Showtime-televised showdown between Matthysee and Humberto Soto on 23rd June 2012. Both the boxer traded a big shot in the opening rounds. However, Matthysse was able to land the consistent big body and came through this bout with another 5th round TKO.

He next faced Ajose Olusegun on 8th September 2012. In the 10th round of the fight, Matthysse’s hard punches over Olusegun made him the winner after the referee stopped the fight via 10th round TKO.

Matthysse vs. Peterson

On 18th May 2013, Matthysse defeated Lamont Peterson in a non-title fight via TKO. After the match, he was declared the next Manny Pacquiao by the Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer. The victory was considered his first step in the door to superstardom. He then faced Danny Garcia as part of the undercard to the Floyd Mayweather vs. Saul Alvarez main event on 14th September 2013.

Matthysse vs. Garcia

On 14th September 2015, Matthysse went on to fight against Garcia. After both fighters went toe to toe in the last ten second of round 12, the judges handed Garcia a unanimous decision: 115-111, 114-112, and 114-112.

Matthysse vs. Postol

On 3rd October 2015, Matthysee faced the undefeated Ukrainian Viktor Postol. Defeating Postol, Matthysse once again went in as a solid favorite.

On 15th July 2018, Matthysese lost his WBA welterweight title against Manny Pacquiao via TKO in round 7 at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur. He later took retirement from boxing in august 2018.

Lucas Matthysse's Personal Life

Standing 5 feet 7 inches tall, Lucas Matthysse weighs 69 kg. Moving into his personal life, Matthysee is a married man. Together with his wife, they are blessed with an adorable baby girl named Pichu Matthysse, who is now 13 years old.
