Deontay Leshun Wilder was born on October 22, 1985, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He is the son of Gary and Deborah Wilder. Growing up he had a younger brother named Marsellos Wilder.

Deontay Wilder made his professional debut on November 15, 2008, facing against Ethan Cox at the Vanderbilt University Memorial Gymnasium. He defeated Cox in the second round via knock out and made his professional debut with a win.
