Burleson was drafted in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, the 71st overall pick. He played three seasons for the Vikings. In March 2006, he signed a seven-year $49 million offer sheet to play with his hometown Seattle Seahawks and played four seasons for the Seahawks.
On March 5, 2010, Burleson agreed to a five-year $25 million contract with the Detroit Lions. He played four seasons for the Lions and had to rest after a fracture in his forearm. Next year, on April 6, he signed a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns. However, he was cut on August 30.
