2020 Summer Olympic gold medalist, Filippo Ganna is an Italian track and road cyclist. Turned a professional since 2015, initially, he began with Lampre–Merida (stagiaire). From 2017-2018, he was with team UAE Abu Dhabi and since 2019 with Team Sky. 

Verbania, Italy native, Filippo Ganna was born on 25th July 1996, under the star sign Leo. His father, Marco Ganna is a former Italian Olympic sprint canoer who competed in the mid-1980s.

Career

Ganna began cycling in 2012 with an amature team Pedale Ossolano. Later, he joined amateur teams such as Aspiratori Otelli Catanese Verbania in 2014, Viris Maserati–Sisal Matchpoint in 2015, and Team Colpack in 2016. 

At the 2016 World Indoor Championships, Ganna exploded onto the scene with an unusual negative splits pursuit style of starting very slowly and falling behind, then turning up the speed in the second half which helped him to win easily.

In 2017, he turned professional with UAE Abu Dhabi. Later two years, he joined Team Sky ahead of the 2019 season.

From November 2019 to February 2020, Ganna set a world record for the individual pursuit on three different occasions, especially lowering the mark from over 4 minutes, 5 seconds to a time of 4 minutes, 1.934 seconds at the 2020 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin.

In 2021, with fellow cyclists Simone Consonni, Francesco Lamon, and Jonathan Milan, they won the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo in 2021 in the team pursuit.
