McClain signed to Auburn to play college football over the offers from  LSU, Tennessee and many other programs.

During his sophomore, McClain became a full-time starter. He recorded a 99-yard Pick Six that helped propel the Tigers to a 48–45 upset in the 2019 Iron Bowl against rival Alabama. 

He led the nation in total tackles, with 113 as a junior the following season. As a senior, McClain was named to the Second Team All-SEC Team.

On 27 December 2021, McClain declared he would forgo Auburn's bowl game and enter the NFL Draft. 

Though he went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft, McClain was signed by the Baltimore Ravens after the 2022 NFL Draft.
