Tom served as a head coach for the first time with the Bulls leading the team to a first 50-win season and 1st division title since Michael Jordan. In addition, after the win over Orlando, he became the NBA history's fastest coach earning 100 victories and broke the record of Avery Johnson.

Tom led Derrick Rose-less Bulls to the fourth-best record at the Eastern Conference in the second year. After getting fired on May 28, 2015, from Bulls, he joined Minnesota on 2016, April 20 serving as their head coach and president of basketball operations.
