Stanley Alan Van Gundy, best known as Stan Van Gundy is an American professional basketball coach who is currently serving as the head coach for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He held the same role at Detroit Pistons (2014-2018), Orlando Magic (2007-2012), and Miami Heat (2003-2005). Before NBA, he coached various college teams. 

Indio, California native, Stan van Gundy was born on 26th August 1959, under the star sign Virgo. He is the son of Cindy Van Gundy and Bill Van Gundy, also a basketball coach. Upon graduation from Alhambra High School, he went to SUNY-Brockport where he played basketball under his father. In 1981, he earned B.A. in English and a B.S. in Physical Education.

 Van Gundy and his wife had four children together. 

They welcomed their first child, a daughter, Shannon Van Gundy in 1991. Their daughter currently works as an assistant director at Stephen M.Ross School of Business. Later four years, they had a son in the family, Michael, a University of Detroit Mercy graduate.

In 1997, they welcomed their 2nd daughter, Alison Van Gundy, who is now an assistant program manager at the Branches. Similarly, Van Gundy’s youngest member, Kelly van Gundy (1999) is enrolled in the University. 

Coaching Career

Van Gundy started his coaching career with the University of Vermont serving as an assistant coach from 1981-1983. He then became the head coach of the Castleton (1983-1986). Further, he served as an assistant coach for Canisius (1986-1987) and Fordham (1987-1988).

In 1988, UMass Lowell announced Van Gundy their new head coach. During his four-season, he saw the institution become the University of Massachusetts Lowell and recorded 54–60. 
In 1992, he joined Wisconsin as an assistant coach. Later, two years he has was promoted to the head coach of Wisconsin. 

In 1995, Stan Van Gundy stepped into the NBA after being appointed by the Miami Heat as their assistant coach. In 2003, he was named head coach when Pat Riley resigned as coach prior to the 2003–04 season. 

in the first half of the season, he led the Heat to the best record in the Eastern Conference, becoming the first Heat coach to coach in the All-Star Game, where he led the East to a victory. 

Less than two years later, he received a coaching job with the Orlando Magic. On 5th June 2007, Magic signed Stan Van Gundy as their new head coach. In his first season at Magic, he led the team to a 52-win season, earning the team's first division championship since the 1995–96 season. In 2008-09, Magic won 59 games in 2008–09, the second-most in franchise history.

On 31st January 2010, Van Gundy was named the coach of the Eastern Conference All-Star team for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game, making it the second time he had been given the honor to coach an all-star team.

On 21st May 2012, Van Gundy was terminated from his duties as head coach.

On 14th May 2014, Van Gundy became the new head coach and president of basketball operations of the Detroit Pistons. After four seasons, on 7th May 2018, Van Gundy was released from his duties as head coach and president of basketball operations at Pistons.

On 22nd October 2020, Van Gundy was appointed the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, replacing Alvin Gentry
