Rick started his career as a player. He started playing hockey from a very early age. The coach began his junior hockey career with the Quebec Remparts of Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Bowness listed his name for the 1975 WHA Amateur Draft. Tulsa Oilers drafted playing in the Central Hockey League. The player made his National Hockey League debut in Atlanta Flames's 1975-76 season.
Rick moved to several clubs before retiring in the 1984 season. While playing for the Sherbrooke Jets, He started working as the head coach. In the 1984-85 season, Bowness became an assistant coach of the Winnipeg Jets under head coach Barry Long.
