Mario Rui Silva Duarte or simply known as Mario Rui is a Portuguese professional football player who plays as a  left back for Portugal national team and for Italian football club, SSC Napoli on a loan from AS Roma.

Apart from representing Portuguese in their junior teams, he also has played for senior Portugal team since making his debut in 2018 and has been included in the 23-man squad for World Cup.

Mario Rui is of  Portuguese nationality. He was born on 27 May 1991 in Sines, Portugal to Portuguese parents.

He played at Portuguese youth clubs of  Vasco Gama Sines, Sporting CP, Valencia, and Benfica in his childhood.

Mario Rui’s Career

After playing for the youth team of Benfica, he joined the main team in 2010 and was later transferred to fellow Portuguese club, CD Fatima as a part of the loan deal during 2010/11 season.

He later signed a five contract with Italian professional club, Parma Calcio for a reported transfer fee of  € 595,000 in the summer of 2012 and was transferred to fellow Italian clubs such as Gubbio and Spezia as a part of a loan deal.

Rui was signed by  Empoli Football Club for an estimated transfer fee of 550,000 in 2013. He was transferred to AS Roma as the part of a loan deal for a loan fee of  € 3 million with also includes € 1.5 million bonus amount in 2016.

He made his debut against UC Sampdoria on 19 January 2017 and was later was transferred to SSC Napoli for initial loan transfer fee of 3.75 million with an option of purchasing him for additional € 5.5 million.

The Portuguese defender scored his first goal in the Italian top league when he scored against SS Lazio.

Mario Rui’s  International Career

After playing for several youth teams of Portugal and representing Portugal at the FIFA U 20 World Cup in 2011 at Colombia as well as the under 21 teams, he made his full international debut for the senior Portugal team in 2018 against Switzerland in a friendly.

He was included in the preliminary 23 men squad of  Portuguese that had stars like Anthony Lopes, Pepe as well as Bruno Alves for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
