He is the fastest ever fighter to win titles in three weight classes. On 30th October 2014, during his career's 4th fight at Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, he won his first title OPBF mini-flyweight title, defeating Ryuji Hara. On 30th May 2015, Tanaka won the WBO mini-flyweight title against Julian Yedras as well as retained the title the following bout against Vic Saludar on 31st December.
On 31st December 2016, Tanaka won the vacant WBO junior-flyweight title against Moises Fuentes and retired the title two more times. On 24th September 2018, Tanaka won the WBO flyweight title against Sho Kimura and retained the title three times.
As of now, he is expected to face Kazuto Loka on 31st December 2020 for WBO junior bantamweight title.
