3X world champion Kosei Tanaka is a Japanese professional boxer who held the WBO mini-flyweight title (2015-2016), the WBO junior-flyweight (2016-2017), and the WBO flyweight title (2018-2020 February). He is the fastest ever fighter to win titles in three weight classes. As of late 2020, he has racked the world's best active flyweight by Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, The Ring magazine, and BoxRec.

Early Years

Despite, Kosei Tanaka suffered from Legg-Calve-Perthe disease, he took up boxing and eventually won four national high school tournaments competing as an amateur in the junior-flyweight division. His uncle, Yuhana Yokoi is a Japanese figure skater and his younger brother, Ryomei Tanaka, is an amateur fighter.

He balances boxing with school and graduated with a degree in economics from Chukyo University in 2019.

Career

On 10th November 2013, Kosei Tanaka made his professional debut against Oscar Raknafa at International Conference Hall, Nagoya, Japan. He won the fight via Unanimous Decision. On 30th October 2014, during his career's 4th fight at Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, he won his first title OPBF mini-flyweight title, defeating Ryuji Hara. On 30th May 2015, Tanaka won the WBO mini-flyweight title against Julian Yedras as well as retained the title the following bout against Vic Saludar on 31st December.

On 31st December 2016, Tanaka won the vacant WBO junior-flyweight title against Moises Fuentes and retired the title two more times. On 24th September 2018, Tanaka won the WBO flyweight title against Sho Kimura and retained the title three times.

As of now, he is expected to face Kazuto Loka on 31st December 2020 for WBO junior bantamweight title.
