Joel Campbell is a Costa Rican professional footballer playing for Liga MX club Leon and the Costa Rica national team. He plays as a forward and winger. His professional club career kicked off in 2009. Campbell wears jersey number 12 in his current squad.

After playing with the junior team of Saprissa, Campbell began his professional playing career with the leading team in 2009 and was transferred to Puntarenas FC on loan in 2011. He signed with English Premier League giant Arsenal in 2011  and was loaned to several European football clubs like  FC Lorient, Real Betis, Olympiacos, and Villareal.

After finishing his tenure at Villareal, Campbell was loaned to Sporting CP, Betis, Frosinone, and Leon. In 2020, he signed a professional deal with Leon, and in total, he appeared in 55 matches. Campbell also played in 32 games scoring four goals with Monterrey. 

Joel Campbell’s International Career

Campbell was called by Costa Rican manager  Ricardo La Volpe in 2011, who rated Joel higher than Argentine forward Lionel Messi and Brazilian striker Neymar. He made his international debut for Costa Rica in 2011 and scored his first goal on June 5, 2011, during  CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011.

Likewise, Campbell represented his nation in  CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2011, 2015, and 2017, and Copa America in 2011. Also, he was a part of the Costa Squad captained by Bryan Ruiz and featured in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he scored Costa Rica’s first goal in the 2014 tournament against Uruguay on June 14, 2014. Campbell has made over 120 game appearances for the senior side.
