His rights were traded to the Miami Heat on draft night and he joined the Heat for the 2013 NBA Summer League. The team wanted him to join their NBA Development League affiliate Sioux Falls Skyforce but due to salary cap restriction, he decided to leave the offer and went overseas to support his family's financial needs.
Ennis joined the Perth Wildcats of the NBL on August 10, 2013. He soon grew to be the team's important member along with import Jermaine Beal. The two helped the Wildcats to the season championship. He played in all 33 games of the season and recorded an average stats of 21.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. After the end of the season, he joined Piratas de Quebradillas of BSN. He spent most of his season in the NBA Development League with the Iowa Energy in defense.
The New Orleans Pelicans also got James Ennis to play for their team on March 30, 2016, for the rest of the season. After the end of the season, he returned to Memphis Grizzlies and signed a two-year $6 million contract. This time around, he got to see a lot more time in court playing in 64 games. He was traded to the Detroit Pistons on February 8, 2018, in exchange for Brice Johnson and a 2022 second-round draft pick.
There is no record of James Ennis having married but he is a father to a daughter nevertheless. In the past, he was in a relationship with a girl named Nicole Parker.
At the time it remains a mystery as to who his wife and the mother of his daughter is. But, seeing as he has not been seen with anyone new, it could be that Nicole and James are still together and have a child together as well.
