In the final game of the WMBA 2022, Las Vegas Aces won their First WNBA Championship title, beating the favorites, The Suns. This is their first title in the history of the franchise. Some experts believe their head Coach Becky Hammon was the missing piece in their squad to lift the prestigious title. Hammon became the 1st Former WNBA Player To Win Championship As a Coach.
Last Winter, Becky became the first Russian head coach in WMBA history after Las Vegas Aces hired her as their new head coach after Bill Laimbeer left the club after working for four seasons. The Aces defeated the Sun, 78-71, to win their first WNBA championship. The Aces finished with the best regular-season record in two of the past three seasons and second in the year they didn’t finish first.
After the game, Sun center Jonquel Jones walked to the Aces’ celebration to hug and congratulate Wilson. Becky worked as an assistant for San Antonio Spurs before becoming Head Coach and winning the first M.V.P. Award in 2020.
Hammon thanked Laimbeer for putting the team together and praised her players.
“What I’m most proud of is we became a real team out here, and a team that cares about each other and trusts each other,” she said.
