Viðar Örn Kjartansson began his career as a member of the UMF Selfoss U-19. On November 14, 2006, he was promoted to a senior team of Selfoss. Later, he left the club in 2008 after making 45 appearances scoring 12 goals.

On February 20, 2009, Kjartansson moved to ÍBV on a free transfer where he scored 2 goals in 17 appearances in 2009. He returned to his former club, Selfoss on May 16, 2010. Before leaving the club, he scored 26 goals in 55 appearances.
