During his youth career, Lichtsteiner played at the youth academy of FC Adligenswil, Luzern and Grasshopper. After being promoted from the youth club of Grasshopper, he made his senior debut during 2001-002 at the Swiss Football league. He was the member of the team that won 2002–03 Swiss Football League.
On 1st July 2005, Lichtsteiner was transferred to Lille with the transfer fee £585K and became the regular player. He left the club in 2008 after scoring 5 goals in 89 appearances.

Lichtsteiner made his international debut with the Switzerland U21 where he played 30 games scoring 1 goal. Following this, he earned his first senior cap with the coach Jakob Kuhn in a 1-2 loss to Brazil on 15th November 2006. He was named as the captain for the 2016 European Championship after long-time captain Gokhan Inler was left out of the team.
Lichtsteiner was named in the final 23-man squad for the FIFA World Cup 2018. Most recently, his team got 1 point after playing draw with Brazil.
