Matarrita started his football career professionally at the age of 18 with Alajuelense. In his four seasons at Alajuelense, he played 57 matches for four goals, won the 2013-14 Invierno Costa Rican Primera Division, and was runner-up for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 Verano Costa Rican Primera Division.
On January 20, 2016, Ronald arrived at New York City FC, signing a contract for an undisclosed fee. On March 6, 2016, he made his MLS debut against the Chicago Fire.
