He hailed from a football-loving family with his father, Johnny Collins Jr., having played football at Florida A&M University. Collins had a strong family connection, with his mother Andrea McDonald, and five surviving siblings.

He attended South Plantation High School in Plantation, Florida, where his talent shone on the football field as a highly sought-after running back.
