Before Nadal's retirement, the game trailed 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, about 2 hours into the first semifinal of the day in Flushing Meadows. The consequences led No. 3 seed the Argentine del Potro back into the U.S. Open final for the first time since his victory over Roger Federer, his only career Grand Slam championship in 2009.
The win without a glory made Juan Martin del Potro unhappy as per his statement:
"Of course, it’s not the best way to win a match. I love to play against Rafa because he’s the biggest fighter in the sport. I don’t like to see him suffering in court today."
Potro will face Novak Djokovic in the finals who moved to finals after beating the Japanese 21st seed Kei Nishikori with 6-3 6-4 6-2 set up.
