2021 Big South Coach of the Year, Pat Kelsey is the current head men's basketball coach at the College of Charleston. Previously he had a long tenure as the head coach at Winthrop Univesity (2012-2021). Also, he served as an assistant for Xavier (2009-2012), Wake Forest (2004-2009), and Elder HS (1998-2001). Besides his coaching, Kelsey is known for the 2012 impassioned speech after the Sandy Hook school shooting incident in which 26 people were killed, including 20 children.
A former player, he played high school basketball at Roger Bacon High School before being transferred to Elder High School for his senior year. In 1993, he helped lead the team to a Division I state title. Further, he started as a freshman guard at the University of Wyoming and then transferred to Xavier in 1994 where he played three seasons.

Kelsey has recently joined the College of Charleston as their new head coach agreeing on a five-year deal that begins with a salary of $550,000 and rises each year to $650,000 in year five.
His annual salary at Winthrop is $247,500 and was eligible for three retention bonuses which were scheduled to be paid if he remained the head coach through July 1 of 2019, 2020, and 2021 of $150,000 each.

Immediately upon graduation, Pat Kelsey started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Wake Forest University and then Wake Forest. In 2009, he became the associate head coach at Xavier where he served until 2012.
In 2012, Pat was hired by Winthrop as their new head coach. During his stint, he led the team to 4X Big South regular season in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2021 as well as 3X Big South Tournaments in 2017, 2020, and 2021.
He has coached a number of athletes who went to have sucessful professional basketball careers including Chris Paul, Jeff Teague, Ish Smith, James Johnson, and Al-Farouq Aminu.
In 2021, he left Winthrop and joined the College of Charleston.
