Cari Champion's Early Life and Education

Champion was born on June 1, 1975, in Pasadena, California in Pasadena, California. She attended the University of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles where she majored in English and minored in Mass Communications.

She is a daughter of Dylan Champion (her father) and Mariah Champion (her mother).

Professional Career of Cari Champion

Cari Champion started her broadcasting career at several TV stations and moved to West Virginia for her first reporting job. She worked as a reporter at the Orange County News channel in Santa Ana, California and later joined WPTV-TV in West Palm Beach, Florida in the same capacity in 2002. She worked as an anchor for WGCL-TV in Atlanta and was fired for allegedly uttering a profanity over the air.

Champion claimed the firing and said in an interview for the Maynard Institute that the floor director had not cued her and her co-anchor about a commercial break and the microphone picked up a conversation that they were having about the rude mechanical screenwriter.

She was rehired for the job in January 2008 but left shortly for a broadcasting job which was outside of Atlanta. She covered news like human interest stories and devastating hurricanes in the state after moving back to Florida and developed her fondness towards tennis after covering players such as Venus Williams and Serena Williams. She was one of the three women selected from a pool of over fifty candidates in an audition for the flourishing news department in the Tennis Channel.

She has joined ESPN on October 1, 2012, as the new host of First Takeover competitor Heidi Watney and Jemele Hill. She made her journalistic debut for the network on November 4, 2014, after proposing ideas for stories to ESPN. She was later replaced by Molly Qerim.

She became an anchor on Sports Center after working with ESPN for six months and was promoted to the position in June 2015. She has also worked as an entertainment reporter for the Starz network and shows such as The Insider and Hollywood 411.
