The Early Life & High School

Herbig originated from Lihue, Hawaii, and spent his early years in Kalaheo, Hawaii before relocating from Kauai to Oahu following his first year of high school to enroll at Saint Louis School in Honolulu. He distinguished himself as a player for the Crusaders, receiving first-team All-State recognition in his senior year.

Alongside his athletic achievements, he demonstrated academic excellence, graduating with a 3.8 GPA and scoring 28 on the ACT.

After committing to play college football at Stanford during his junior year, Herbig reversed his decision and reopened his recruitment shortly after completing his senior season. Despite considering offers from California and Washington, he ultimately reaffirmed his commitment to Stanford.

College Stats

Herbig was a dependable and flexible lineman for the Stanford Cardinal, starting 28 out of 44 games he played in three seasons. He could play both guard positions and even fill in as a right tackle once. He earned All-Pac-12 honors twice, both for his athletic and academic achievements.

In his breakout season as a sophomore, Herbig notably started all 13 games at right guard and received first-team All-Pac-12 accolades. His contributions were instrumental in the Cardinal ranking second in the conference in rushing offense and third in scoring offense.

Additionally, he played a key role in blocking for Bryce Love, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, who achieved 2,118 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.

Herbig's junior season was marred by injuries, leading to his absence in six games due to various ailments. Despite these challenges, he made seven starts, with six at right guard and one at right tackle, and received second-team All-Pac-12 honors. Subsequently, he chose to forego his remaining college eligibility and declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.

NFL Draft

Herbig was expected to be a mid-round pick, but his draft value dropped a lot after a bad showing at the NFL Scouting Combine, where he ran the 40-yard dash in 5.41 seconds, the worst time of all 260 players. He did not get drafted and joined the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent.

In his rookie season, Herbig primarily contributed to the practice squad, featuring in just two games. However, his involvement expanded significantly in his second season, during which he started 12 games at both right and left guard, filling in for injured players on the Eagles' offensive line.

Impressively, he performed admirably, conceding only two sacks and committing merely three penalties across 791 snaps.

After being traded to the New York Jets in 2022, Herbig saw limited action in just three games before being waived. Subsequently, he was picked up by the Pittsburgh Steelers, reuniting with his older brother Nick, who is a tight end for the team. In 2023, the Steelers secured Herbig with a two-year contract, aiming to leverage his skills to enhance the depth and adaptability of their offensive line.
