Gueye, the youngest of four children in a family of athletes, was born on 9 November 2002 in Dakar, Senegal. He played soccer as a child, but his mother urged him to try basketball because he was very tall. His older brother’s basketball games inspired him to play.

With the help of his basketball coach Mamadou Cisse, Gueye met Philippe Doherty, who coached Prolific Prep Academy in Napa, California. Gueye moved from Dakar to the US at 16 and enrolled at Prolific Prep, where he played basketball for the first time.

The star rose to become a top-50 prospect and a four-star recruit nationally. By completing his academic obligations early, he advanced to the 2021 class and ultimately opted to commit to the Washington State Cougars, rejecting several other substantial offers.

In his first season with the Cougars in 2021–22, Gueye had 7.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and .5 assists per game. He made the Pac-12 all-freshman team. Gueye entered the 2022 NBA draft but pulled out after hearing from NBA teams. He looked at other options but decided to stay with the Cougars for another year.

During the 2022-23 season, Gueye's role with the Cougars expanded significantly due to the departures of key front-court players. His position shifted to center from power forward, and he became the focal point of the team's offense, as emphasized by head coach Kyle Smith.

His standout performance included a career-high 31 points against the USC Trojans on February 2, 2023. For the season, he averaged 14.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game, earning him a spot on the All-Pac-12 first team.

Professional Career

After being chosen as the 39th overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets, Gueye's rights were traded to the Boston Celtics and later to the Atlanta Hawks on draft night. Subsequently, on July 3, 2023, Gueye inked his rookie contract with the Hawks.
