In 2005, Cavendish's first years as an elite track rider saw him winning the gold in the madison. Later, three years, he was the 2008 UCI Track Cycling World Championships riding for Great Britain, alongside Rob Hayles and Bradley Wiggins. 

After he looses to win a medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Cavendish did not compete on the track. He made his come back in 2015 and won his third UCI Track Cycling World Championships title in the madison the following year. Further, as an individual, he won silver medal in the omnium at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
