Career of Manuel Fernandes

Fernandes played street football with Luis Carlos Almeida da Cunha a.k.a Nani. He began his career as a midfielder with the youth team of Benfica. He spent seven years with the youth academy of Benfica from 2004 to 2007.

After being promoted from the youth team, Fernandes started playing in a senior team since 2003 and made his debut at a 2003-004 season, with Jose Antonio Camacho.

He then grabbed an attention ina short-duration on both club's supporters and manager after becoming second youngest ever goalscorer in his second game, in a 2-1 victory against Gil Vicente FC.

Fernandes was named as a starter eleven during the 2004-005 season under an Italian football manager Giovanni Trapattoni. On 19th March 2005, Fernandes netted a goal in a 2-0 victory away Vitoria F.C. Everton

Fernandes returned to his previous club and loaned to Everton on 1st January 2007 after extended his contract with Benfica. He was sent on loan with the loan fee €400 K.

His first match came in a 1-0 win against Blackburn Rovers on 10th February 2007. He scored 9 goals, 10 matches before ending his loan contract with Everton.

Valencia

On August 1, 2007, Fernandes signed a six-year contract with La Liga club Valencia with the transfer fee of €18 million and made his debut against UD Almeria as a substitute on 2nd September 2007. During his first season, he played seven games.

Loan Back to Everton

Fernandes signed for Everton on loan, with a deal agreed €750K on 1st January 2008 for five months. During his five-month loan career, he made 12 appearances.

Fernandes back at his parent club in 2008-009 season and played his first match in a 3-0 victory against ECD Mallorca.  He then netted a goal in a victory over Real Valladolid. Afterward, he was expected to sign with Inter Milan. However, the deal was canceled after he failed in his medical exams.

Fernandes later loaned to Besiktas in a deal worth €800K on January 5, 2011. During his six-month spell, he went score 1 goal in 14 official appearances. Lokomotiv Moscow

On 2nd June 2014, Fernandes was landed in Moscow on a long-term contract in a deal worth €2 million. He was named as the Player of the Month as of October 2014 for his diligent performance.

Fernandes wrote his name as the fastest-ever player to scored a hat-trick in the history of the UEFA Europa League in a 3-0 victory against FC Fastav Zlin. He later countered Balotelli’s team OGC Nice in a 3-2 victory. He has so far scored 21 goals in 83 appearances.

He is the member of the Lokomotiv that won 2017-018 Russian Premier League and Russian Cup (2014-015, 2016-017).

International Career

Fernandes earned his first international cap with the Portugal U17 team on August 14, 2003, with whom he played 4 games scoring 1 goal.

Following this, Fernandes earned 5 caps for U19 scoring 1 goal. Afterward, he participated at the UEFA European U-21 Championship where he netted the opening goal in a 4-0 victory against Israel. However, his national team failed to qualify for Olympic.
