2010 FIFA World Cup runner-up team member Maarten Stekelenburg is a Dutch professional football goalkeeper who currently plays for the Premier League club Everton and the Netherlands National Team.

Early Life

A native of Haarlem, Maarten Stekelenburg was born on 22nd of September 1982. His birth sign is Virgo. Regarding his nationality, Stekelenburg is a Dutch and is of white ethnicity. He always dreamed of becoming a footballer since his childhood and went on to join Zandvoort 75 at very young age and later moved to Schoten.

Club Career

Ajax

Maarten Stekelenburg joined Ajax in the year 1997. Following his way through the various youth level at the club he made his professional debut on 24th February 2002, against NAC Breda. Over his nine seasons at Ajax, Stekelenburg played overall 282 games, winning 9 honors including 2 Eredivisie titles.

Roma

On 1st August 2011, Steklenburg arrived in Roma, signing a contract for a fee of $7.44 million. He picked the jersey no. 24, which was the day his son was born. On 11th September 2011, he made his Roma debut against Cagliari.

Fulham

On 5th June 2013, Steklenburg signed with Fulham with 4-year agreement for a fee of $6.58 million. On 17th August, he made debut for the club against Sunderland in a 1-0 victory.  

Loan Spell

Monaco

On 9th August 2014, Stekelenburg was loaned out to As Monaco on a season-long loan deal. On 17th December, he made his debut for the club against Lyon in the Coupe de la Ligue. Similarly, his Ligue 1 debut came on 22 March against Reims in a 3-1 win.

Southampton

Again on 22nd June 2015, he was again loaned but this time to Southampton. 8 days later he made his first appearance in a 3-0 victory over Vitesse.

Everton

On 1st July 2016, Stekelenburg arrived in the Everton, signing for an unrevealed fee.  He debuted for the club in a 1-1 ho,e draw against Tottenham. So far, he has played overall 13 games representing FC Everton.

International Career

In 2002, Maarten Stekelenburg joined the U-21 Netherlands national football team. He was a member of the U-21 Dutch squad at the “2011 FIFA World Youth Championship”.

In the year 2004, he was first called up for the Netherlands national team. On 3rd of September, Stekelenburg made his international debut against Liechtenstein in a 3-0 victory. Though he was called up for the “2006 World Cup”, he didn’t play the game during the tournament. Further, he played for the “Euro 2008” as a Dutch national team member.

Manager Bert van Marwijk called Stekelenburg for the “2010 FIFA World Cup” in South Africa. He also played against Belarus in the “2018 FIFA World Cup Qualification” in a 4-1 win.

So far, the Dutch star has earned 58 caps with his national side. He is a good friend of his national teammate Wesley Hoedt, Stefan de Vrij, and Vincent Janssen.

Maarten Stekelenburg is a married man. He tied the wedding knot with his longtime girlfriend Kim Stekelenburg to whim he loves very much. The couple has two children together named Naud Stekelenburg and Sem Stekelenburg which completes their happy family.
