Waldschmidt started his youth career playing with SSV Oranien Frohnhausen in 2001. In 2007. he moved to SSC Juno Burg and then TSG Wieseck in 2010. Further, he joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 2014. 

On 25th April 2014, Luca signed his first professional contract with Eintracht Frankfurt, agreeing on a three-year deal. Later a year, he made his Bundesliga debut, comming as a 73rd-minute substitute for Sonny Kittel in a 0–2 home loss to Borussia Dortmund.

On 8th August 2014, he scored his first goal for Eintracht Frankfurt in a 3–0 victory against  Bremer SV in the first round of the German Cup.

On 30th June 2016, Luca joined  Hamburger SV on a four-year contract, making his debut for the team as an 83rd-minute substitute to Bobby Wood on 17th September in a 0-4 loss to RB Leipzig.

On 24th October 2016, Luca scored his first goal for the club in a 4–0 win over Hallescher FC. The following season, he appeared in 21 league games for Hamburger with one goal. 

In May 2018, he signed to newly relegated to the 2. Bundesliga club SC Freiburg. During his stint there, he played 53 games and scored 16 goals. 

On 14th August 2020, Luca moved to Benfica on a five-year deal for 15 million euros. On 18th September 2020, he made his debut against Famalicao where he scored twice in a 5-1 Primeira Liga win. 

In 2021, he joined VfL Wolfsburg. His teammates are Ridle Baku and Lukas Nmecha


Luca has played for Germany at U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 levels.
