A late-first or early-second-round pick in the 1997 NBA draft was expected for Garris, but he was not picked. As a free agent, he signed with the Denver Nuggets and played in 28 games for them in 1997–98, scoring 2.4 points and dishing out 1.1 assists per appearance.
However, he was cut before the regular season by the Los Angeles Clippers after playing for them for a short time in their 1997 preseason.
Later, during the 1999–2000 season, he played in three games for the Orlando Magic and averaged 1.3 points per game. The Sacramento Kings signed him for the preseason in 2002 but dropped him again before the regular season.
