Joe Schilling was born on January 13, 1984, in Dayton, Ohio, United States of America. He is of American nationality and has a white ethnic background. He was raised by a single mother along with two siblings.
Schilling had a troubled childhood and was expelled from several schools for his disciplinary reasons. Joe took up Muay Thai at the age of 15.

Joe later made his kickboxing debut against Hisaki Kato at Bellator Kickboxing2 and lost the match via KO in the second round of the match.
