João Moutinho

Portuguese professional footballer Joao Filipe Iria Santos Moutinho, best known as Joao Moutinho, currently plays for As Monaco FC and the Portugal National Team as a midfielder.

He began his professional career with Sporting, moving in 2010 to Porto and winning 12 major titles between the two clubs combined. Three years later, he transferred to Monaco in 2013.

Early Life of Joao Moutinho

A native of Portimao, Portugal, Joao Moutinho was born on 8th September 1956, to Nelson, a former professional football player. Regarding Moutinho’s nationality, he is a Portuguese and belongs to white ethnicity. His birth sign is Virgo.

At the early age of 10, Moutinho began his football career in youth level at FC Portimonense. In 2000, he moved to Sporting CP, signing to continue his football education at his 13.

Following various youth level at Sporting CP, Joao Moutinho received his first call-up to the senior squad by manager Jose Peseiro. He made some appearance and displayed some talent early on. However, he returned to the team B coached by Paulo Bento.

On 23rd January 2005, he made his Primeira Liga debut in a 3-0 victory at Gil Vicente F.C.  He played total 163 games including 30 appearances from B team, scoring 22 goals for the club.


On 3rd July 2010, Moutinho moved to Porto, signing a 5-year contract with FC Porto for a fee of €11 million. He made over 83 appearances and scored 4 goals, playing for 3 seasons.


On 24th May 2013, Moutinho signed with AS Monaco FC along with his teammates James Rodriguez for a joint fee of €70 million. On 1st September, he made his debut against Olympique de Marseille, setting up both goals in a 2-1 victory, which led Monaco to the top of League 1. So far, he has made 136 appearances with 3 goals for the club.

International Career

Joao Moutinho was a part of Portugal U-17, U-18, U19, U21, and B national team. On 17th August 2005, he made his international debut in a friendly match against Egypt which ended in a 2-0 home win. He registered a very first goal for his national side in a 2-0 friendly win against Georgia on 31st May 2008.

Furthermore, he was named by Bento for the 2014 World Cup along with Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, and Andre Silva, making debut in the tournament in a 0-4 group stage loss to Germany on 16th June.

So far, he has won 105 caps for his national side, scoring 7 goals.

Currently 31, Joao Moutinho is a married man. He tied the knot with his high school sweetheart Ana Sofia Gomes in 2007. The couple welcomed their first child, Lara Moutinho in 2010.
