Nunnally attended Weston Ranch High School in Stockton, California where he played for his high school basketball team. In the senior year of his high school career, he held an average of 22.1 points and 8.3 rebounds.
After completing high school, James William Nunnally enrolled at UC Santa Barbara and played for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. During his college years, he was named to the All-Big West Tournament team for three straight years.
James Nunnally remained undrafted in the 2012 NBA draft. He signed a one-year deal with Kavala of the Greece Basket League but left the team after only three games in October of 2012.
