Gylfi Sigurdsson was born to father Sigurdur Adalsteinsson on 8 September 1989 in Reykjavík Iceland. He holds an Icelandic nationality. As siblings, he has an older brother and a sister. He started his playing career by joining the youth club of Fimleikafelag Hafnarfjardar in 2002.
After playing for the youth clubs of Breidablik and English club, Reading FC, he joined the main in 2008. He made his debut for the club against Luton Town on 26 August 2008 and later on transferred to Shrewsbury Town Football Club and Crewe Alexandra Football Club as a part of the loan deal from Luton Town.
Sigurdsson then signed with German Bundesliga football club, 1899 Hoffenheim in 2010 and made his Bundesliga debut against Schalke 04 on 10 September 2010 as well as scoring his first goal against Kaiserslautern on 17 September 2010.
While playing for Hoffenheim, he was loaned to English Premier League club, Swansea City for 2012 season and made his debut against Arsenal on 15 January 2012 as well as scoring his first goal for Swansea City against West Bromwich Albion on 4 February 2010.
He then signed with English football club, Tottenham Hotspur for an estimated transfer fee of around £8.8 million during the summer of 2012.
