Birkir Bjarnason is a professional Icelandic football player who plays as a central midfielder for Iceland Nation Team and English professional football club, Aston Villa. He has represented Iceland in their youth levels and made his debut for the senior Iceland team in 2010.

The Icelandic midfielder even played in the UEFA Euro 2016 and helped the team to reach the quarterfinal of the tournament. He is nicknamed as Thor for his similarities with the superhero.

Birkir Bjarnason's Career

Birkir Bjarnason began his senior career with the Norwegian football club, Viking FK in 2006 and scored his first goal for the club against Hamarkameratene.

While he was with Viking, the midfielder was transferred as a part of a loan deal to FK Bodo/Glimt.

After over a 100 appearances and scoring 16 goals in the process for Viking he was transferred and signed a five-year contract deal with Belgian football club, Standard Liege in 2012.

After his time with the Belgian side, he joined Italian side, Pescara in July 2012 for a fee of £ 300000 with an extra added fee of £ 900000 to sign. He scored his first club goal for the Italian side against Napoli.

Bjarnason later signed with the fellow Italian club, Sampdoria in 2013 and later rejoined with Pescara and signed with the club on 20 June 2014 and was immediately elected as the team captain of Pescara.

He was the pivotal player in Serie B and made 35 appearances and scored 14 goals for the club.

Birkir was signed to Swiss football club, FC Basel for three years for €1 million in July 2015 and made his Basel debut against  Grasshoppers Club Zurich on 25 July 2015.

He scored his first for the Swiss club against Polish side, Lech Poznan on 5 August during the  Champions League third qualifying round.

Birkir Bjarnason was part of Basel team that won the Swiss Super League in 2015/16.

Currently, the Icelandic international is with English football club, Aston Villa whom he signed a three and a half year contract deal on 25 January 2017 and scored his first goal for the English side against Wigan Athletic on 22 August 2017.

Birkir Bjarnason's International Career

After representing Iceland in the U17, U19 and U21 teams, he made his debut for senior Iceland team in 2010 and scored his first international goal against France on 27 May 2012.

Birkir Bjarnason along with players such as Kari Arnason, Hjortur Hermannsson, and Johann Berg Gudmundsson was among Icelandic players played at UEFA Euro 2016 Championship at France and scored Iceland first ever goal in a major FIFA Tournament against Portugal on 14 June 2016.

The midfielder helped the Iceland team to qualify for the quarterfinal round of the tournament where they were defeated by France.
