Hjortur made his senior career by joining the main team of Fylkir in 2011 at the age of 16 and made his official debut for Icelandic football club against Stjarnan on 6 June 2011.
He scored his first club goal for Fylkir against in a winning effort against Vikingur and was a regular starter for the team.
The Icelandic striker went on make 12 appearances for Fylkir and scoring one goal in the process. He signed a three-year contract with Eredivisie football club, PSV Eindhoven on 1 July 2012 and made his debut against FC Oss on 18 August 2013.
While playing for the PSV Eindhoven he was transferred as a loan to clubs such as Jong PSV and IFK Goteborg and after spending several seasons with the Dutch club, he signed with Danish football club, Brondy IF on 2016 for an estimated transfer fee of $ 3,69,225.
