Ari Freyr Skulason began his career as a member of the Value U-19 team. On February 21, 2003, he moved to the youth team of Heerenveen U-17 on a free transfer. Later, he left the club after spent two seasons.

On June 2, 2005, Ari Skulason moved to a senior team of Valur on a free transfer. For the club, he scored 1 goal in 11 appearances before leaving the club in 2006.

On August 15, 2006, Ari Skulason was transferred to Hacken. He was the member of the UEFA Cup qualifiers. He later scored a winning goal over Scottish club, Dunfermline Athletic F.C. He scored 2 goals in 21 appearances.

Ari Freyr Skúlason was transferred to GIF Sundsvall on January 1, 2008, and later became the captain at the start of the 2012 season. He scored 29 goals in 149 appearances before leaving the club in 2013.

On July 29, 2003, Skúlason made his international debut with the Iceland U-17 with whom he played 9 matches.

Ari Skulason has been described as one of Iceland's most promising defenders after representing Icelandic youth international, having earned caps at under-19 and under-21 level.

On November 10, 2009, Skulason earned his first senior cap in a friendly match against Iran in a 1-0 win. He then has been the starter left-back in the national team during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Skulason then named for the Euro 2016 and played all five matches which led the team in the quarter-finals. He has been capped 52 times for his national team.
