William Troost-Ekong is a Nigerian international football player who currently plays as a center back for Nigeria national football team and professional Turkish club Bursaspor. The 25-year-old footballer has played for Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Groningen, FC Dordrecht, Gent, and Haugesund etc before penning a deal with Bursaspor.

 

In 2011, Ekong made his international debut with the Netherlands U-19 team and later made a switch to Nigerian National Team. Currently, he is inducted in 23 man's football squad for the Nigerian national team in Russia World Cup 2018.

In April 2018, he revealed through an Instagram post that he is expecting his first child. Later in May, he also paid tribute to his pregnant partner by making tummy of the ball after scoring a goal. 

His girlfriend gave birth to a son named Oscar after the World Cup 2018 on July 24.

William Troost-Ekong’s Bio and Early Life

William Troost-Ekong was born on September 1, 1993, in Haarlem, Netherlands. Ekong is of mixed black ethnicity and holds a Dutch and Nigerian nationality.

Ekong was born to his Dutch mother, Eleanore Troost, and Nigerian father and grew up with his sister, who goes by the name Bambi Ekong on Instagram and a younger brother. His sister is a London-based writer.

William Troost-Ekong’s Career

William Troost-Ekong has played with Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur during his youth career. He has played with the Tottenham U-21 until 2013.

On  June 23, 2013, Ekong made a free transferred to FC Groningen. He was then loaned to FC Dorecht for the 2014-2015 season where he played 34 matches until June 30, 2014.

On July 27, 2015, Ekong was transferred to KAA Gent from FC Groningen on a free transfer while his market value was €300K. He then immediately loaned to FK Haugesund for the 2015-16 season and made his debut against Viking FK.

In March 2016, Ekong scored his first goal in his career against Aalesunds FK. He has played 37 games, scoring 4 goals before ending his loan-season.

On July 8, 2017, Ekong signed a three-year contract with Bursaspor of the Super Lig with the transfer fee of €1.05 million. 

On 17 August 2018, Troost-Ekong signed to Italian Serie A side Udinese.

William Troost-Ekong’s International Career

At the age of 18, Ekong earned his first international cap with the Netherlands U-19 team under the coach, Wim van Zwam and played a single game with the team.

Ekong then played 2 matches for the Netherlands U-20 under the coach Remy Reynierse in 2013. On August 5, 2016, he took his first step in Olympic with the Nigeria  Olympic Team under the coach Samson Siasia where he played 6 games.

On June 13, 2015, Ekong earned his first senior cap under the coach Stephen Keshi against Chad in an AFCON. For the national, he earned 17 caps since 2015.

As a capable defender, Ekong has been honored with a Nigeria Pitch Award for “Defender Of the Year” in 2016. He, along with Shehu Abdullahi, Kenneth Omeruo, and Ola Aina, was called up for the match against Argentina in November 2017. He made his debut in the World Cup against Croatia on 16th June.
