Vance Joseph was born as Vance Desmond Joseph on September 20, 1972, in Marrero, Louisiana to parents Linda Joseph and Robert Joseph. He grew up with together with his older brother Mickey Joseph. He attended the Archbishop Shaw High School and played as a quarterback for their football team. He won Louisiana's 4A state championship as a sophomore and was USA Today honorable mention All-America honors as a senior.
After graduating high school, Joseph enrolled in the University of Colorado where he played for the Colorado Buffaloes football team as their quarterback and running back. He played in 30 of the Buffs games as a backup to All-American Darina Hagan and Kordell Stewart. He became a member for the 1990 National Championship team.

Vance Joseph never entered in the NFL draft but was picked by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent. Joseph had mostly played the position of the quarterback during his high school and college football but was switched to the defensive back position by the Jets. After leaving NFL, Joseph became a graduate assistant for the Colorado Buffaloes from 1999 to 2001. For a brief moment, he became the secondary coach for Wyoming Cowboys in 2002. However, he returned to Colorado as the defensive back coach in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, he went to Bowling Green Falcons as their defensive back coach.
