Cissoko, born on April 2, 2004, in Saint-Maurice, France, comes from a basketball lineage as his father, Yaya, represented Senegal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Further, he has a brother named Boukhary Cissoko, who is also involved in basketball.

His passion for basketball took root at a young age in France, where he idolized Kyrie Irving, an inspiration for Cissoko due to his smaller stature compared to his peers. 

In addition, his early basketball development led him to attain the under-15 level with CTC Center Essonne before making a significant move to Spain in 2017 at the age of 13, joining the youth ranks of Baskonia.

Professional Career in Europe

In the 2020–21 season, Cissoko played for the Baskonia reserves in the fourth-tier Liga EBA, excelling with an average of 17.4 points per game. He also guided the Baskonia junior (under-18) team to a fourth-place finish in the junior national championship, leading in both points and assists.

Subsequently, Cissoko earned a call-up to the Baskonia senior team for the 2021–22 ACB season, making his debut at just 17 years old.

Following his debut, he was loaned to Baskonia’s satellite club, Iraurgi SB, in the second-tier LEB Oro, where he showcased solid averages of 10.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 32 games. Cissoko also trained with the Baskonia senior team, citing Wade Baldwin IV as a source of invaluable learning.

NBA G League Ignite & NBA Draft

Cissoko made history on July 19, 2022, by becoming the first European player to sign with the NBA G League Ignite, an affiliate of the NBA G League. His decision was influenced by the success of Dyson Daniels, a 2022 lottery pick who also transitioned from the NBA Global Academy to the Ignite.

At the time of his signing, Cissoko was ranked as the third-best European prospect in his class by ESPN's Jonathan Givony, trailing only Victor Wembanyama and Rayan Rupert.

During his tenure with the Ignite, Cissoko participated in 36 games, where he posted impressive averages of 12.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. Additionally, he showcased his skills at the 2023 NBA G League Next Up Game, contributing 18 points and seven rebounds for Team Ignite.

The star entered the 2023 NBA draft and was chosen by the San Antonio Spurs as the 44th overall pick in the second round. Following in the footsteps of Tony Parker, he became the second French player drafted by the franchise. He inked a two-way contract with the Spurs, granting him the flexibility to divide his playing time between the NBA and the team's G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs.
