Sergei Ignashevich began his football career as a youth player at Torpedo Moscow from 1988-1977. Following that, he played for Junior squad of Spartak Moscow.

Sergei Ignashevic commenced in a senior career in Spartak Orekhovo in 1998 and debuted professionally for the club in the same year. He left the club in 1999 after scoring 1 goal in 17 appearances.

After a one-year spell in Krylia Sovetov, Ignashevic was transferred to Lokomotiv Moscow on 1st January 2001, with the transfer fee of £720K. He was the member of the team that won 2002 Russian Premier League, 2001 Russian Cup, and 2003 Russian Super Cup.
