Rie Kaneto is a Japanese competitive swimmer who specializes in the breaststroke events. She is the gold medalist swimmer in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Kaneto was born on 8 September 1988 in Shobara, Hiroshima, Japan. She holds a Japanese nationality and is of Yamato ethnicity.
Kaneto was born to Hiroaki Kaneto and Fujiko Kaneto. She has a sister named Rio Kaneto. She is a physical education graduate of Tokai University in Hiroshima.
Kaneto has been playing for the Japanese National team since the age of 19.
Kaneto represented her nation Japan at the 2008 Summer Olympics and bagged four medals in major international competitions, spanning two editions of the Summer Universiade (2007 and 2009), the Short Course Worlds, and the Pan Pacific Championships.
Apart from the career of Olympic, Kaneto broke both a Japanese and Asian record of 2:20.72 at the Japanese University Championships in Kumamoto.
Kaneto turned professional upon debuting at the 2007 Summer Universiade in Bangkok, Thailand, bagged a silver medal at the 200 m breaststrokes by less than 0.04 of a second behind South Korea’s Jung Seul-Ki in 2:25.63.
Kaneto showed her excellence in the women’s 200 m breaststroke at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
She placed second at the Olympic Trials in Tokyo with a standard entry time of 2:26.28.
At the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade, Russia, Kaneto set an Asian and Japanese mark of 2:22.32 to claim the 200 m breaststroke title.
In 2010 Asian Games, she placed fourth behind two Chinese swimmers and new champion Jeong Da-rae of South Korea in 2:25.63.
Kaneto won gold at the 200M Breaststroke with a time of 2:20.30, defeating Yulia Efimova by 1.67 seconds.
