A Legendary Australian league former footballer, Peter Sterling currently works as a commentator on Fox Sports. He played football for Parramatta Eels, Hull F.C., New South Wales, City NSW, Australian Kangaroos, and Country New South Wales rugby league team.

 

Sterling is regarded as one of the best halfbacks of all time having inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame.

Peter Sterling's Early Life and Education

Peter Sterling was born on June 16, 1960, as Peter Maxwell John “Sterlo” Sterling in Toowoomba, Queensland and raised in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales. His mother, Dorothy Sterling is an American writer and historian.  Regarding his nationality, Sterling is Australian and belongs to white ethnicity.

At the age of 14, Sterling joined the Wagga Wagga Kangaroo Panthers in 1974. While his father was serving as a dental technician, he spent a number of years living at RAAF Base Wagga. He then shifted to Sydney and attended the Patrician Brothers’ College on a scholarship.

Peter owned a house in Matcham which he sold between $3 million to $3.3 million recently in June 2018. He had bought the land for $500,000 in 1997 and built the house where he and his wife with their children for almost 20 years.

Peter Sterling’s Career

Sterling joined the Parramatta Eels in 1978 as a fullback and his first match came against Manly-Warringah. He made 190 points from 227 matches, 48 tries, and 1 goal before ending his career with the team in 1982.

Sterling then joined the Hull F.C in 1983 for the 1983-84 season. He has played around two years with the club where he made 40 points in 36 matches and 10 tries.

As a successful rugby player, Sterling has been honored with Dally M Award Player of the Year and Dally M Award for Best Halfback (1983, 1984, 1986, 1987).  Sterling was picked at halfback in a pool to judge the best Australian team since the limited tackle rule in 1967, to which he won eight out of fourteen votes. The remaining of six votes went to Billy Smith, Ricky Stuart and, Allan Langer.

Peter Sterling's International Career

 Sterling made his international debut with the New South Wales in the 1981 State of Origin game. He was then drafted by Australian Kangaroos in their two series. Moreover, he played 1 match for City NSW in 1982. At the same year, he made his debut for Australian Kangaroos. He has made 16 points from 18 matches for the Australian Kangaroos.

On another hand, Sterling played 5 matches for County New South Wales rugby league team.  He has been honored with Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for his contribution to Australias’ International standing in rugby league. Moreover, he was listed on Australia’s 100 Greatest Players (1908-2007) by NRL and ARL.

Sterling has appeared in Rugby League; Four Nations (2009), The Price Is Right (2003) and 20 to 1 (2005) etc. In 1989, his autobiography, Sterlo The Story of Champions was published by Lester-Townsend Publishing Pty Ltd; First Edition edition.

Sterling also hosted “The Sunday Footy Show” in 1993 until the end of 2015. He later joined the Triple M. network and worked on the “Monday Night Football”. Currently, he works for "Nine’s Thursday Night Football” and hosts the Australian tv series, "On the Couch with Strelo”.

Sterling is married to his wife, Selina Sterling. The couple is the parents of two children; a son named James and a daughter named Hannah. Currently, he lives with his wife and children on the Central Coast. He is the supporter of Liverpool F.C. in the premier league.
