Darren McCarty was born on April 1, 1972, in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. McCarty spent most of his childhood in Burnaby. He was born to Canadian parents and thus held Canadian nationality. Talking about his ethnicity, he is of a Caucasian ethnic group.

McCarty's father, Craig, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the bone marrow and blood, in 1995. In 1997, Darren McCarty established the McCarty Cancer Foundation to raise funds to finance research for a cure for this type of cancer.

Darren McCarty Professional Career

Darren McCarty spent much of his childhood in the small town of Leamington, Ontario, playing for the Southpoint Capitals (OMHA) minor teams.

Darren played in the Ontario Hockey league from 1989 until 1992 along with Belleville Bulls. The player earned the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy. He listed his name for the 1992 NHL draft. Red Wings drafted him in the second round overall forty-ninth pick. McCarty scored 26 points in his rookie season as the Wings won the Central Division title. In the 1996/97 season, McCarty played an important role while the team won the Stanley Cup in forty-two years. 

Darren won the Stanley Cup four times in 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008, the last of which after resurrecting his career in the Red Wings minor league system. The player spend eleven seasons with the club and then moved to Calgary Flames in the 2005 season. In December 2007, McCarty moved to Flint Generals and returned back to Red Wings for the last season of his playing career. In December 2009, Darren announced his retirement. 

On November 23, 2009, McCarty made his debut as an NHL Analyst for Versus. McCarty made occasional appearances on the Versus post-game show, Hockey Central. McCarty served as a fill-in co-host on Detroit's WXYT-FM (97.1 The Ticket).
