He was born to Robert and Cathy Thompson and was raised in Anchorage, Alaska.

Thompson played most of his junior ice hockey career for the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds. After his second season, the Boston Bruins drafted him in the sixth round, 183rd overall, at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

In 2005, Thompson’s professional career as a hockey player began. He agreed to an entry-level contract with Boston Bruins and his debut in the NHL in 2006-07, playing four games. However, he played most of his game with Providence in the AHL.

Thompson scored his first NHL goal playing for the New York Islanders on November 4, 2008. He signed a one-year contract with New York Islanders on July 27, 2009. Upon playing in 39 games with the Islanders in the 2009-10 seasons, he was picked by the Tampa Bay Lightning on January 21, 2010, where he appeared in 32 games for the first season.

Later in 2011, Thompson agreed to a two-year extension contract with Tampa. In that season, he appeared in 51 games, career-high seven goals, ten assists, and seventeen points.

Thompson agreed on a four-year contract with an extension on March 3, 2013. During the 2013-14 seasons, he played in 45 games. The Anaheim Ducks, in exchange for two picks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, picked him.
