Santner was named in the New Zealand team for England tour, following the retirement of Daniel Vettori after the World Cup as New Zealand searched for another left-arm spin option.
He made his One Day International debut on 9th June 2015. He then scored 28 runs off Adil Rashid in one over, during fourth ODI.
Likewise, Santner made Twenty20 International debut against Australia on 23rd June 2015. Following this, he made his Test match debut against Australia on 27th November 2015, which was the first day/night Test. He then named the first player in history to make his test debut in a Day Night.
Santner drafted in New Zealand squad along with Nathan McCullum. He was awarded the man of the match in the first match against India.
Former New Zealand international cricketer, Jeetan Patel and he became the first duo of spinners in history who kick off an ODI by opening the bowling in the first inning of 4th ODI against South Africa. In May 2018, he was drafted for the 2018–19 season by New Zealand Cricket.
