Darren Sproles played football for the Kansas State University and was hired by the San Diego Chargers after the 2005 NFL Draft with a contract of $1.7 million. With his signing bonus of $392,000, the annual salary of Sproles in the 2005 season was $230,000.

Sproles earned the annual salary of $195,000 and $385,000 in 2006 and 2007 respectively, which increased to $1.1 million in the 2008 season. In 2009 season, Sproles was placed as the franchise tag for the Chargers, and he signed a contract worth $6.621 million.

Professional Career of Darren Sproles

Darren Sproles previously played college football at Kansas State from 2001 to 2004 and later after the 2005 NFL Draft was selected by San Diego Chargers. Making his debut in the 2005 season, he played the third-string running back but missed his 2006 season after breaking his ankle.

After resuming his game on November 11, 2007, he made history by returning a kickoff and a punt for his first two NFL touchdowns being the first player in league history ever to do so. 

In his 2008 season, Sproles became just the second player in NFL history with 50 rushing yards, 50 receiving yards, and 100 return yards in one game on September 14, 2008. With the increase in his skills, Sproles became the franchise tag for the Chargers. 

After playing for the Chargers till 2010, he joined the New Orleans Saints on July 29, 2011, with a 4-year contract. In 2011, Sproles became the record-breaking player after overcoming the NFL single-season record, previously set in 2000 by Derrick Mason setting the average of 168.5 all-purpose yards per game.

In his 2013 season, Sproles broke over 1000 all-purpose yards in only his seventh game as a Saint in his first season.

He played for the Saints till 2013 where he played in 15 regular-season games, running for 220 yards and 2 touchdowns on 53 carries, making 71 catches for 604 yards and 2 touchdowns, 12 kickoff returns for 225 yards, and 29 punt returns for 194 yards.

Later he was signed by Philadelphia Eagles on March 13, 2014, with a contract of 2 years which was extended for a year on July 29, 2016. After suffering a broken arm and a torn ACL in a game against the New York Giants on September 25, 2017, he was placed officially on the injured reserve.
