A Japanese professional footballer, Maya Yoshida, currently plays for Bundesliga club Schalke 04. He also played with the  Premier League club Southampton as a center-back. Before landing at Southampton, he played for VV-Venlo (2010-2012) and Nagoya Grampus (2007-2009).

Maya Yoshida was born on August 24, 1988 in Nagasaki, Japan, to Akiko Yoshida. Regarding his nationality, he is Japanese and of Asian ethnicity.

In 2001, Yoshida began his football career at only 13, playing at Nagoya Grampus as a defensive midfielder.

With his promotion to Nagoya Grampus senior team, Yoshida was converted to a Centre in 2007. The following season, he began in a starting lineup for most of the league matches. On March 10, 2009, Yoshida scored the club's historic first goal in the AFC Champions League against Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i.


In December 2009, Yoshida peened to Dutch Club VVV-Venlo. He played two seasons for the club, appearing in 54 matches with five goals.


On August 30, 2012, Yoshida signed a three-year contract for a reported transfer fee of £3 million. On September 15, 2012, he made his Southampton debut in a 6-1 defeat against Arsenal.
