Maya Yoshida was born on 24 August 1988 in Nagasaki, Japan, to Akiko Yoshida. Regarding his nationality, he is Japanese and is of Asian ethnicity.
In 2001, Yoshida began his football career at aged only 13, playing at Nagoya Grampus as a defensive midfielder.
With his promotion to Nagoya Grampus senior team, Yoshida was converted to a Centre back in 2007. The following season, he began as a starting lineup for most of the league matches. On 10th March 2009, Yoshida scored club's historic first goal in the AFC Champions League in the match against Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i.
