Matias Fernandez was born on 15 May 1986, in Caballito Argentina. His full name Matías Ariel Fernández Fernández. He has always considered himself Chilean and holds of Chilean nationality, though he was born in Argentina. He is the son of Mirtha and Humberto Fernandez. His mother was an Argentine.

Fernandez started his football career with the youth squads of Colo-Colo at the age of 12. His debut in the Primera División was on 1 August 2004 against Universidad de Chile. He was named the best young player of the season in 2004. He played two seasons for the club and later switched to the La Liga.
He joined Spanish side Villareal in 2006 and made his La Liga debut in a 0–1 home loss against Valencia CF on 7 January 2007. He stayed in the club for 3 seasons earning 71 caps and scoring 7 goals. He then switched to the Portuguese club Sporting.
