After graduating from St. John's in 1987, Jackson was selected 18th overall by the New York Knicks in the NBA draft. He spent the first five years of his career with the Knicks, where he quickly established himself as one of the league's top point guards along with Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing.

In his rookie season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team, and he was named an NBA All-Star in 1989. Jackson also played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Indiana Pacers, Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors, Utah Jazz, and Houston Rockets during his 17-year NBA career.
